SwimSafer Stage 1: Build Confidence Underwater from The Beginning
Stage 1 is the basic structure of the SwimSafer Programme. Everything is aimed at making kids comfortable and confident in the water. At this level, there’s none of the pressure of swimming laps or diving into the deep end. The emphasis is on enjoyment and getting an introduction to essential skills in the water.
What Your Child Will Learn
- Get in and out of the pool safely
- Dip their face and make bubbles
- Float on front and back with support
- Kick while holding onto a board
- Paddle your arms in basic paddling motions to slip through the water

SwimSafer Stage 1 Test Sequence
Sequence 1A (Without Goggles)
- Perform the following sequence:
- Enter the water with slide-in entry
- Swim on the back 5 meters (alternating arms and legs or simultaneous arms and legs)
- Submerge head in water, open eyes, blow bubbles & identify object on pool floor
- Perform a front float for 5 sec and recover
- Then perform a back float for 5 sec and recover
- Swim 10 meters on the front (alternating arms and legs or simultaneous arms and legs)
- Signal distress and call for help
- Grasp a float and float for 10 sec
- Then move (with the float) to the pool’s edge and
- Exit safely from pool
Sequence 1B (Without Goggles)
- Dressed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt demonstrate:
- Correctly fit a PFD, jump into water
- Float for 30 sec, and then climb out of the water
